Feng Shui Basics

Feng Shui, literally translated from Chinese, means Wind and Water, which symbolizes the balance of the elements. Based on a 5,000-year-old science, Feng Shui uses the 5 elements (water, wood, fire, earth and metal) to create a space that is as supportive for you as possible.

In the Classical School, Feng Shui looks at the energy blueprint of the home or business and optimizes the space to enhance the good energies and weaken or block the bad ones. It is important to note that positive and negative energies are present in all spaces, and the goal of Feng Shui is to improve the overall energy of the space, in order to support and inspire you.

In Feng Shui, a space is divided into sections to create the bagua map (bagua meaning 8 places), representing the 8 directional areas of the home or business. Each direction is associated with certain aspects of life, and can be optimized by balancing the elements present in it:

North: Career & Life’s Journey

Northeast: Knowledge & Spirituality

East: Family & Community

Southeast: Wealth & Abundance

South: Fame & Reputation

Southwest: Love & Relationships

West: Children & Creativity

Northwest: Travel & Helpful People

Finally, the Center of the space, which has no directional association, represents Health, Balance & Well-Being.

By looking at the year the building was built (or “born”) as well as the direction it faces, we can determine the energies present in each area (or “gua”), remedy any negative energies and create a positive space, inspiring you to maximize your potential.

The main tools used in Feng Shui to remedy negative energies are the elements themselves: water, wood, fire, earth and metal. By intentionally placing certain elements in specific areas – with everyday objects (ex: stones for the earth element or plants for the wood element) – we can discourage negative energies and bring balance to the space.

Other tools, such as artwork, essential oils, or even crystals, can also be used to enhance remedies and positive energy to nourish and support you.

Feng Shui also looks at the layout of the space. We try to position the different elements of the space (furniture, appliances, doors, windows…) in order to promote good energy flow and remove any potential blocks or conflicting energies. The goal is to create a space in which you can feel your best – a sanctuary you can always come back to, that will empower you to improve any and all aspects of your life, be it your wealth, career, love life or health.

Whether you are facing a challenging situation or an already great one, there are always adjustments we can make using Feng Shui to make your space more inspiring and supportive for you in all areas of your life.
